Although Amalgam fillings have been the material of choice for many dentists for decades, they are now considered inferior to resin composite filling materials.
The metal nature of the amalgam filling places enormous cyclic stresses on the surrounding tooth, resulting in microcracks within the tooth. Over time, these cracks can increase in size and ultimately lead to the tooth breaking or becoming sensitive.
If the tooth has broken, a crown may be indicated, which is unfortunately more costly.
