Dental crowns in Northwood. Restore strength, function, and aesthetics to damaged teeth.

At DNTL Smiles & Wellness, we provide professional, specialist-led restorative care, and dental crowns are one of the most reliable and versatile solutions to restore weakened, broken, or aesthetically compromised teeth.

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits securely over a tooth, reinforcing its structure and improving its appearance. Whether you’re dealing with tooth decay, a crack, or post-root canal fragility, crowns offer long-lasting protection and a natural-looking finish.

Why you might need a dental crown

Crowns are recommended for a variety of restorative and cosmetic reasons:

  • Strengthening a weak or cracked tooth.
  • Restoring a broken or worn-down tooth.
  • Protecting a tooth after root canal treatment.
  • Supporting a tooth with a large filling.
  • Covering a discoloured or misshapen tooth.
  • Replacing a missing tooth as part of a dental implant.
  • Holding a dental bridge in place.

Types of dental crowns we offer

We offer a variety of crown materials to suit different needs and preferences:

Porcelain crowns

  • Natural, tooth-coloured appearance.
  • Ideal for front teeth.
  • Excellent aesthetics.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns

  • Strength of metal with tooth-coloured porcelain coating.
  • Great for front or back teeth.
  • Durable and cost-effective.

Zirconia crowns

  • Extremely strong and metal-free.
  • Natural translucency with excellent durability.
  • Suitable for both front and back teeth.
  • Gentle on opposing teeth.

Gold and metal alloy crowns

  • Long-lasting, highly durable, and biocompatible.
  • Best for out-of-sight molars.
  • Minimal wear on opposing teeth.

E-Max and  LAVA™ crowns (Advanced ceramic options)

  • Ultra-thin and strong for higher aesthetics.
  • Long-lasting and stain-resistant.
  • Popular for cosmetic restorations.

What to expect: The dental crown procedure

The crown process typically takes two visits:

Visit 1: Preparation and  temporary crown

  • Examination and X-ray to assess the tooth.
  • Tooth reshaping and enamel removal.
  • Impressions or digital scans taken.
  • Temporary crown placed while the permanent one is made.

Visit 2: Crown fitting

  • Temporary crown is removed.
  • Final adjustments for fit, shade, and bite.
  • Permanent crown bonded using dental cement.

In certain cases, same-day crowns may be possible using advanced CAD/CAM technology. Ask us if you’re a candidate.

Veneers vs Crowns: What’s the Difference?

Inlays and onlays – A conservative alternative

When full crowns aren’t necessary, inlays and onlays provide a minimally invasive option:

  • Inlays: Fits inside the tooth’s chewing surface.
  • Onlays: Extends over the tooth’s cusp for added coverage.

Made from porcelain or composite, they offer strength and a natural look with less enamel removal than a full crown.

Long-term crown care

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10–15 years or longer. Here’s how to maintain yours:

  • Brush and floss daily.
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods.
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
  • Attend regular hygiene visits and dental exams.
  • Report any looseness, discomfort, or damage early.

Specialist prosthodontic treatment

Our in-house prosthodontist brings advanced training in restoring complex dental conditions, ensuring your crown blends seamlessly with your bite and smile.

Why see a prosthodontist?

  • Precision and artistry in crown design.
  • Ideal for complex cases or multiple restorations.
  • Focus on long-term function and aesthetics.
  • Integrated care with implants, bridges, and dentures.

Frequently asked questions

Are crowns painful?

No. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, and most patients experience little to no discomfort.

How long do crowns last?

On average, crowns last 10–15 years, though some can last even longer with good oral hygiene.

What’s the difference between a cap and a crown?

They’re the same thing! “Cap” is just a more informal name for a dental crown.
